Project Description
Camp Newaygo Health and Leadership Lodge
Camp Lodge Expansion
Location: Newaygo, MI
Completed: 2018
New construction: 9,500 SF
Camp Newaygo is a camp on the hilly shores of Pickeral Lake in Newaygo County that, for 80 years, operated solely as a summer camp for girls. Since the expansion and winterization of the main lodge in 2009, the camp has grown with leaps and bounds. An increase in summer campers, enhanced year-round programs, and aging original camp buildings have led to the need for new facilities.
InForm Architecture was hired in the fall of 2014 to design a new multi-use, LEED-certified Health and Leadership facility. The facility will operate year-round, allowing for increased use of the camp grounds for training, conferences, retreats and weddings. The building will include much-needed housing for interns and staff, as well as a new health center designed to meet current standards for treatment of sick campers. Growing conference and retreat use has led to increased demand for the private rooms planned for the building’s lower level. Siting of the building required easy access from the heart of camp, without dominating the core cluster of existing buildings that sit atop the hill. The new structure will be located at the edge of the cluster, perched over the hillside, and affording views in — and visibility from—all directions.
