Adaptive Reuse of Corporate Office Facility

Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan identified a need for high quality adult day services in Kalamazoo County and looked to begin a comprehensive medical-model program to meet those needs. To house the program, Hospice Care purchased a ten-year old, two story corporate office building.

The project involved researching and design of a facility specifically for adult day services. Spaces include a dining facility for 70 people, several lounge and activity spaces, a physical and occupational therapy area, two bathing areas, an exam/treatment room and a resting room. An enclosed exterior patio provides a secure exterior environment for clients during the summer months. The layout is designed to encourage active exploration by clients and the design includes familiar residential clues such as fireplaces, small furniture groupings and a home-like kitchen to make clients feel at home.

The upper level of the building was completely renovated for use as a grief and loss center for Hospice Care. Spaces specifically designed for various age groups from infants through adults allow the organization’s group and individual counseling activities to occur at one location for the first time. This portion of the facility also houses staff offices and conference facilities.
