Project Description
Sutton’s Bay Cottage
New Cottage
Location: Suttons Bay, Michigan
Completed: 2000
Floor area: 1,200 SF
After visiting family on the Leelanau Peninsula in Northern Michigan for many years, this family decided that it was time to explore purchasing a small place of their own in the area. Suttons Bay, a small but self-sufficient village on the peninsula’s east shore was the ideal spot. After exploration of existing structures over the course of several years, an empty lot on a dead-end road just two blocks from “downtown” became available. After an extensive design process and much negotiation with contractors, construction began in the fall of 1999 and the cottage was first occupied on New Years Eve 1999.
The cottage is very simple in plan. The main level contains a great room with a simple galley kitchen on one end and a fireplace on the other. This space has a vaulted ceiling. A modest bedroom and the bathroom are also located on this level. Above the bedroom and bath is an open sleeping loft that overlooks the great room.
